EURO - Napoleon DBQ Feedback

Hey Euro Studies Students!

I hope you're all enjoying your break...

I just wanted to let you know that I've given feedback on your preliminary outlines on turnitin.com. You should have a score out of 10 points for *completion* of the assignment, not for quality of your work.

The essay folder is open, so submit it at any time. It is due at 4pm on Monday, no excuses. Just pretend like you have to print it out and turn it in to me in class - so turn in the digital copy the night before, if you can!

A few notes on the DBQ:
I've noticed a LOT of people making assumptions in their arguments. Just because a document shows Napoleon as being heroic, for example, doesn't mean that he was acutally seen as heroic. Make sure you know WHO WROTE THE DOCUMENT - the point of view has a huge impact on what the evidence can prove.

Also please go over the DBQ checklist in your packet before you turn your paper in. I will not be lenient about spelling, grammar, formatting, etc., and I will expect that you will all turn in your highest quality work.

If you have questions, post to the blog or email me, and otherwise, enjoy your break!

I'm off to play in the snow...

Hey Ms. Shea

I'm confused on how to accomplish number 7 on the checklist. Like if we 're citing from the documents only how do we include outside information in our essays?

thanks!

Also, sorry if you already told us this which you probably did, but how do we use the picture documents in our essays? Like do we copy and past them in the document or just type like: Napoleon Crossing the Alps by Jacques Louis David, 1800 (Doc. 7)?

you said that the essay could be 1 to 1 1/2 pages long... could it be longer? I tend to naturally make my argument papers very long... I'm on my second paragraph and I already have taken up an entire page...

oh, nevermind, I just checked my email...

Hey Ms. Shea

I was wondering if we could just use "Napoleon DBQ" as our title or does it have to be creative? Also, the page which shows the format is how our essay should look like right? Finally, my last question is what exactly is the transition sentence like I know it connects to next argument but im not quite sure how you want us to use it.

Hey Ms. Shea

I also wanted to ask you for the DBQ Checklist in #6 it says "including examining bais and point of view of the document authors" does that mean we have to give evidence from both sides? If so, I'm confuesed on how I can prove my thesis?

Hi gang - sorry I've not replied, just gotten back from being out of town...

The "outside information" is about context - using what you already know about Napoleon to make a credible argument. For example, if you knew from the reading that he was a short man, you couldn't credibly argue that he was a tall man just from document information. The doc's are just a small collection of information - you have to use all you know to form a good historical opinion. If you want to cite your book as a source to support an argument, that's peachy.

Citing the picture documents is as easy as saying... "In the image of Napoleon on the rearing horse (Doc 7), we can see that..." or "The satirical cartoon Du Haut En Bas shows Napoleon tumbling from power, having overstretched the boundaries of his empire (Doc 8).

The format of your essay should be a normal essay - no ABCD or I, II, II. That's just the outline to help you plan. Sorry if that was confusing.

Title does not need to be creative, unless you want it to be.

Examining bias doesn't necessarily mean showing both sides (hard to do in a paper this short), but is rather about making sure your evidence proves your point (see my previous emails).

Hope this helps!
